Theodore Ziel was one of 8 children born to German (Prussian) immigrants. He built his cigar business from the ground up. Raised 7 children.Outlived two wives and one son.(First wife died in childbirth in 1896 or so. Second wife, my great-grandmother, died of pancreatic cancer in 1927. Son, Willie, drowned in the Mississippi River at 9 or 10) Ted and his children (my Grandma amoung them) survived small pox, thyphoid fever, diphtheria and the "normal" childhood diseases. Two of his children are still living. My Grandma and Uncle Ted, his namesake. Grandma will be 95 in November, Uncle Ted is the baby, he was just 82. We just lost Uncle Clarence a few weeks ago. He was 93. Except for Willie, all his children lived to be in their 80's. It is ironic that, in spite of the fact that he made cigars for a living, none of them ever smoked.

Ted Ziel had three types of cigars. Two of the boxes are shown here. His nickname was "Buck". And
Uncle Clarence was "Little Buck". So, two of his brand names were "Big Buck" and "Little Buck".
Those are pictures of my great-grandpa and Uncle Clarence on the boxes.

My great-grandpa died in 1942, 15 years before I was born. He died when
the water heater in the house exploded. His bedroom was on the other side
of the heater. I am told we were at war with the Germans and, even though
he was born in the USA, the FBI checked out the explosion with great care.

Until a few years ago, the only pictures I saw of him were on the cigar box,
or his school board picture. (He served for many years on the school board for
Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin). In all these pictures, he always seemed to me to be
very stern. About 10 years ago, someone found some old home movies from the
1930's. He was in them and talking and laughing. And I realized that this man
was a lot of fun. My mother and her brothers remember him as having candy in
his pockets. And my grandmother said that every Saturday he bought a bag of
candy for his children. So, I thought, he might like the jelly beans...
